The Tumbes region was inhabited by large ethnic groups devoted to agriculture, hunting and trade. One of these groups was the Tumpi people, who were considered the finest navigators of all the Peruvian coastal peoples. Subsequently, the region was incorporated into the great Chimú kingdom and then the Inca state.

Main plaza of the city of Tumbes

The main plaza has recently been fully renovated and is decorated with an acoustic chamber covered with mosaic. Known as the “Meeting of Two Worlds”, the image depicted alludes to the arrival of the Spanish and illustrates the great natural richness of the region. At the center stands the representation of the local chieftain Chilimasa, who resisted the invading Spanish forces. Local people relax in the plaza, strolling or sitting under the trees (Kingelia pinnata). The climate in the city is hot and rainfall occurs in the summertime (December to April).

Church of San Nicolás de Tolentino

Main Plaza.

Built in the 17th century by Augustinian fathers, this baroque style church is remarkable for its two arches, the two-leveled gabled roof and the pointed-arch cupolas covered in mosaics. The interior of the church is decorated by the main altar, carved from wood and covered with mosaics. The stained-glass windows depict scenes from the life of Jesus Christ, and there are carved figures of the saints,the Holy Virgin, and an excellent carved image of Christ.

Climate

The maximum annual temperature is 26°C (79ºF) and the minimum temperature is 19°C (66ºF).

The climate changes when the El Niño phenomenon is present, and at such times temperatures in the city increase.

Walking Routes

Several pedestrian streets invite visitors to tour the city on foot, and these include: La Concordia, Los Libertadores, Jerusalén and Triunfino. Other parts of the city which are popular with local people include Boulevard de La Madre, Plazuela El Beso, Plazuela Bolognesi and Parque del Avión.

Puerto Pizarro Mangroves

Approximately 13 kilometers from the city of Tumbes (15 minutes by car).

The fishing village of Puerto Pizarro is the starting point for boat trips to the mangrove swamps. This ecosystem is formed by the estuaries or navigable channels that form part of the delta of the Tumbes River and they can reach heights of up to six meters. The islands are created by the accumulation of mud sediments. During the tour, visitors will be able to disembark at Isla del Amor [Love Island] and Isla Hueso de Ballena [Whalebone Island], which possess the best beaches in the area.

El Bendito Rural Community

El Bendito is a rural community located on the southwest edge of the Manglares [Mangrove] Sanctuary, where local people live by harvesting clams and king prawns. Visitors can participate in the extraction of clams, take rowboat excursions or simply relax on the white sandy beach.

Hervideros Medicinal Mud Baths

The site of a geyser, this tourist attraction is known as the Hervideros Medicinal Mud Baths or Hervideros Mud Baths. Hervideros is located 5 kilometers from Bocapán, to the south of Zorritos. Hervideros is situated on Guacura Hill. The natural spring here contains iodine, chlorine and iron, and the mud impregnated with these minerals is said to possess medicinal properties. The concentration of mineral deposits dissolved in the spring water gives it the appearance of a mud spring, flowing slowly and bubbling to the surface. There are different pools for different treatments, and this is a natural spa for the people of Zorritos. Here you will be able to relax and indulge in a full beauty treatment.

Cabeza de Vaca Archaeological Site

The Cabeza de Vaca Archaeological Site is located approximately 5 kilometers to the southwest of the city of Tumbes (10 minutes by car).

According to researchers, this mud brick and stone archaeological site was occupied in pre-Inca times, during the period of Chimú dominance and also during the Inca period. Pieces of pottery, bone fragments and stone tools have been found at the site, as well as the remains of a workshop where Spondylus shells and other mollusks were carved.
